Positions

What were the origins of the priesthood and temple restriction (1852–1978), and how should it be understood?

In his 2003 discussion of doctrine, Millet holds that the reasons for the restriction were not revealed and that earlier racial explanations should be discarded. He argues that members can sustain prophetic authority without treating every past explanation as doctrine, and that the 1978 revelation establishes the availability of priesthood and temple blessings regardless of race.

In other words, we really do not know why the restriction on the priesthood existed.
